Adoption from Brazil can be a very lengthy process. Children available for adoption are generally age 3 and older, mixed race, and reside in orphanages. In 2008, U.S. citizens adopted approximately 43 children from Brazil.

Travel required: Prospective parents are required to live in Brazil with the child for a period of at least 15 days for children under age 2, and at least 30 days for older child.

Other: A psychological evaluation of applicants is required. The homestudy must be performed by a professional social worker who is authorized by local authorities in Brazil to perform such work.
